Inspired by "The Wounded Deer" by Frida Kahlo © 2021 Banco de México Diego Rivera Frida Kahlo Museums Trust, Mexico, D.F. / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York.

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is one of the most recognizable modern artists today, famous for her self-portraits that place the artist in fantastical situations yet remain grounded in Mexican culture. Painted towards the end of her career, many have interpreted "The Wounded Deer" (1946) as a representation of the artist’s continuous emotional and physical pain throughout her life. In the painting, a deer stands in an open clearing after being struck by several arrows, surrounded by a forest of bare trees that lead out to the sea. Yet the deer’s emotionless face is the artist’s own visage, making the work a surreal self-portrait.
