Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is one of the most well-known modern artists today, famous for her self-portraits that place the artist in fantastical situations yet remain grounded in Mexican culture. Popular interest in her work often focuses on her biography, particularly her health problems and her complicated relationship with fellow artist Diego Rivera. In this painting, "Frieda and Diego Rivera" (1931) Kahlo painted the pair two years after they were married. Their differing heights mark Rivera as solidly present, while Kahlo’s body appears much lighter, almost floating aside him.
